Introduction: Sign Masking

A strippable coating for temporary masking of acrylics, plastics polystyrene and painted surfaces during paint spraying and vacuum metallising. For temporary protection.
Some means of masking must be used to determine the areas to be covered with leaf. Masking tape could be used, but can be troublesome on the compound curves of a turning. General Chemical’s liquid masking material-SignPeel Maskant is available that works well.
Applies as a liquid and dries to form a contour hugging plasic film. Easy to cut and weed and simply strips away after use leaving no residue. Economic and ideal for moulded sign pans.

Description

Liquid mask may be painted on the turning with a brush, but spraying it with a Critter spray gun at 90 psi works much better. This provides a relatively smooth surface on which layout lines can be accurately drawn. Remember that this product is water-based, and applying a too heavy first coat may cause moisture to migrate into the wood, raising the grain and damaging the pre-finish. A light coat of mask, followed by two or three heavier coats will work well. If the mask is too thin, it will be difficult to remove. If it is too thick, material has been wasted, and it will be more difficult to obtain sharp edges on the leaf. As each coat dries, it will change from white to a transparent blue- color.

TENSILE STRENGTH
ELONGATION: 200% minimum
APPLICATION: By brush, roller or by standard spray guns, e.g. DeVilbiss JGA or MBC equipped with (a) Pressure feed with FF or FX nozzle and jet with 765 Air Cap: (b) Suction feed with FF or FX (1.8 tip size) nozzle and jet with 306D Air Cap.

Atomisation pressure 4.05-4.75ATM (60-70psi). A minimum Dry film thickness of 100 microns is recommended. (250 microns wet
Apply to achieve a minimum wet film thickness of 250 microns = 100 microns DFT (dry film thickness). IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ACHIEVE AN EVEN DFT OF MIN 100 MICRONS. As anything less may result in the film becoming difficult to remove.
Try to avoid ‘feather edges’ or areas where it is applied thinly. In order to achieve a defined edge it may help to apply masking tape, roller up to and over the tape and remove tape while BoatPeel Peelable coating is still wet.
Airless Spray Equipment
Airless systems using at least 2000psi with a recommended tip size of .021.
Air Spray Systems

DRYING TIME: Tack free in approximately 2 hours. Force drying at 45oC can be used with plenty of air circulation.
ADHESION: 90gms/cm width (0.5lb/in. width) on cast acrylic.
REMOVAL: By hand stripping.
COVERAGE: Approximately 4m2/litre at recommended dry film thickness 0.10mm (0.004″).
CLEAN UP: Clean brushes or spray equipment in water immediately after use.
STORAGE LIFE: 12 months. Store at temperatures between 5°C and 20°C. DO NOT ALLOW LIQUID TO FREEZE.

1. Contains emulsified resins, plasticizers and water
2. Product must be kept from freezing.
3. Remove any existing surface contaminates and static electricity.
4. Ready to spray.
5. Siphon Feed: .086” (2.2 mm Pressure Feed: .078-.086” (2.0-2.2 mm) HVLP: .070-.110” (1.8-2.8 mm).
6. Spray apply 20 – 25 wet mils minimum.
7. Dry to cut graphics at 70oF (20oC) 50% R.H. – 12 hours. Ready to spray.

SCHEDULE: 12 – 24 hours at 65–95oF (18-35oC). SignPeel may be force dried at 100-110 oF.
Increasing air flow speeds up dry time.

SUITABLE SURFACES: Acrylic, impact modified acrylic, ABS, CAB, polycarbonate, styrene and most flexible and rigid vinyl.

Surface Preparation:
Paper masking may leave a latex residue on the sheet. This residue can result in poor wetting of the paint on the surface of the sheet and poor paint adhesion.Clean plastic with mixture of isopropyl alcohol, or T-4000 and water (1:1 by volume).

Paint Removal: Spray and screen paints can be removed using General Chemical’s Aquastrip 5570 Paint removers. To reduce the chances of crazing the surface of the sheet, minimize the amount of time ACRYLITE SG sheet is in contact with these solvents. Even with the complete removal of paint from the surface of the sheet, a phenomenon referred to as “ghosting” often occurs. A hazy outline of the original images may remain and become visible upon application of new paint.
Painting techniques typically used with acrylic and polycarbonate sheet can be used with ACRYLITE SG sheet.

Repair: If the dry film rips or tears, the flap may be lifted and resealed by applying a fresh wet coat to the underside and resealing. Alternatively, cut away flap and re-apply fresh coating, it will bond to itself.

External Weather Resistance: Long-term exposure to sunlight will cause premature deterioration and brittleness of the film. Exposure to water after the film is dried will soften the film but it will recover once it dries. Avoid traffic over the wet or while the film is wet. If components are to be stored externally for several weeks we recommend the application of acrylic topcoat which will protect for 12 months and more.

Drying Time:
It is critical that Our Peelable coating film is allowed to cure dry. Drying time will vary according to humidity, temperature and weather condition. The evaporation of water will be speeded by air movement and warmth supplied by natural and mechanical means.

Curing:
It is possible to get a 3 mil tack free dry coating film in less than one hour drying in air at ambient temperature. For maximum tensile strength , 12 hour drying time is better. Blowing air past the surface of the wet film, drying time can be shortened. Heated air up to temperature of 115f can also help in drying time. Mask cures upon water evaporation.

Dry time is dependent upon temperature, humidity, air movement and thickness of the coating. Curing may be accelerated by forced dry air up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Force dry coatings can cure in less than 10 minutes. Most coatings without assist will dry in a few hours. It is imperative that Liquid Mask be thoroughly cured and dry, before an attempt is made to peel the coating from the substrate. Cured coating is transparent throughout. Cured Mask is water resistant. Surfaces coated with Mask can be water mopped.

Application by roller might require a few coats. Thick coating peels in one large continuous sheet. Thin coatings will break in areas of coating weakness. Mask is water based for safe use and easy water clean up. Dry coatings are water resistant. When applying Mask use the same protection as used while applying paint.

Adhesion:

Process:
Our Peelable coatings once completely dry are resistant to water and solvent and acts as a mask against sprayed emulsion paints, lacquers, oil or grease and water.

Removal:
The dry Our Peelable coatings strippable coating film can be easily removed either by hand stripping or other means. Our Peelable coatings are thermoplastic. Do not try to remove in freezing conditions. Our Peelable coatings becomes brittle in freezing condition.

Clean Up:
Our Peelable coating is a water-based product and you can clean spray equipment and brushes with water. Do this immediately before peelalbe coating starts to dry.
